Who Has the Most Success Losing Weight?

There are some interesting statistics on this Daily Infographic.  As a dietitian, I’m happy to see that most of the people surveyed wanted to lose weight because of concern for their health.  Many years ago, the numbers would have been different.  At that time, more people were concerned about how their clothes fit.  So, America, congratulations on getting it right!

Some people are luckier than others when it comes to achieving more immediate results.  Sometimes a slow weight-loss may be because you haven’t decreased the calories enough, aren’t as physically active as you need to be to burn off the pounds, or you may be taking medications that make it more difficult to lose weight.  Don’t give up!  Everyone can lose weight.  Just don’t compare your success or slow rate of success to someone else’s rate of weight loss.

From a personality point-of-view, the most interesting nugget on this infographic  was in the footnote:  “In a recent study by the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research, participants who kept food journals lost almost double the weight of their nonjournaling counterparts.”

Overall, Judgers are better at keeping records, lists, and journals than Perceivers. (If you don’t know your type, take the free personality quiz and see what is the right diet for your type.)   Perceivers can do it, but would probably be using willpower to maintain it for a long period of time.  I bet that if the participants in the Kaiser Permanente study were given the MBTI®, there would be more Judgers than Perceivers in the group, especially knowing that part of the weight-loss program was keeping a food journal.  The benefit to journaling is that it helps keep you more aware of what you’re actually eating.

However, Perceivers can be just as successful as Judgers in losing weight.  They should just do it in a way that is comfortable for their type.
